Bogdanovka Memorial

The memorial appears just as it had on-line from Berlin, and as it looks in the model in Odessa. Here when you read the inscription saying 54,600 people are buried at this location, you are standing on the earth which covers them, and you are looking at the edge of the ravine on which they stood when they were shot before they tumbled onto the bodies below. I stood at the edge of the ravine and looked down, stood at the edge and looked back towards where the Romanian military and Ukrainian civilian executioners would have stood. It would have been entirely personal here, with the killer having to look directly at his victim as he shot him in the neck. Unlike industrial sites like Auschwitz and Treblinka the victim would have been completely aware of what was happening.
